Zen Buddhism and the Art of Link Building

It seems that since the latest Google Panda update, article directories have slowly become an outdated SEO tactic along with many others. With Google constantly updating its algorithm, article directories are now considered to be the easy way out when it comes to creating backlinks and they provide little value. Unfortunately, good link building is not easy and, like all tasks involved with search engine optimisation, it takes a lot of time and effort.

Building easy backlinks for example, through article directories is not the best use of your time. Just think of the old saying, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” The same question can be asked of linkbuilding; – if we create a link on a page that that nobody ever sees, is it really going to improve our rankings and add value to our website? Links are not just for Search Engines, they are for people and should drive traffic to your web site, the days of “chasing the algorithm” are over.

In the book ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ author Robert Pirsig explores numerous philosophical discussions, including epistemology and emotivism. He suggests “to truly experience quality, we must embrace and apply it as it best fits the requirement of a situation” (Pirsig, 1974). If we want to post written pieces which increase brand awareness, we need to ensure that the piece is written to an exceptional standard of quality and also that it is published on a quality web site that has the right audience.

Guest blogging is becoming a popular and successful link building tactic. It’s an ideal technique for building your brand, earning recognition and creating valuable backlinks. Knowing your audience is crucial when producing high quality guest blog posts. The best posts are those which stimulate reader interaction; they generate comments and debates, and are shared via social media which can add a great amount of value to your site. Good SEOs know that links are for people, not just for Search Engines.

A couple of years ago, the Guardian published a list of the “Top 50 Television Dramas of All Time”. The list sparked controversy for the absence of the 1985 conspiracy thriller Edge of Darkness and the Guardian eventually had to publish a second article, explaining their reasons for leaving the series off the list. Many suspected, however, that far from some deep rooted objection to Bob Peck’s beautifully measured performance and Troy Kennedy Martin’s on-the-razor-edge script, the true motivation for ignoring Edge of Darkness was to provoke just such engagement with the list as a whole. Be informative, be insightful, be helpful and be controversial.

There are many well established blogs, each belonging to a particular genre or niche. With guest blogging, it’s important to always think about what your audience is looking for and which blogs they are likely to be reading. Link building should be based on producing worthwhile content and placing it where the intended audience will see it to improve rankings and increase brand awareness.
